Hermano Pedro was a Spanish missionary in Guatemala, often referred to as the "St. Francis of Assisi of the Americas." He is recognized as Guatemala's first saint. Notably, he established a hospital for the impoverished in La Antigua and was known for his humble spirit and austere lifestyle dedicated to practicing mercy.
A Life of Service
St. Hermano Pedro is celebrated as the great evangelist of the West Indies, dedicating his life to assisting marginalized individuals, including lepers, prisoners, slaves, and Indigenous people. He also played a significant role as a precursor to Human Rights.
He was beatified in 1980 and canonized in 2002 during Pope John Paul II's visit to Guatemala. His tomb attracts thousands of visitors each year, who come to seek favors and miracles.
